Who is God’s Favorite Desciple: The Great Sage Gets Humbled

lord vishnu
Once upon a time, Naarad asked God Shri Hari, ” Who is your favourite disciple?”

Shri Hari understood that Naarad is proud of his love and servings towards him. So, he smiled and replied, ” Naarad! in this world created by me, lives a farmer in shivpur village. He is my favourite disciple.”

Naarad was surprised by the God’s answer and asked,” O Lord! Can you tell me what is in that poor farmer that makes him your favourite?”

At this, Shri Hari told Naarad to spend one whole day with the farmer.

Naarad went to shivpur village where the farmer lived. After reaching farmer’s home, he saw that the farmer gets up early in the morning, feeds his cattle, completes his morning tasks and then, does his morning prayers. After that, he leaves for his farm to cultivate crops there.

Naarad was very surprised by the farmer’s daily routine. He went back to Shri Hari and said,” O Lord! this poor farmer remembers you only few times in the whole day whereas I takes your name 24 hours a day continuously and still he is your favourite. Why so?”

Lord Shri Hari smiled and took a pot full of amrit, handed it to Naarad and said,” Naarad! take this pot and go have a walk around the world once. But take care of this pot. It is filled with amrit. Not even a single droplet should spill out of the pot while walking.

Naarad followed the instructions obediently. After completing his walk around the world, he came back to the Lord and gave the pot of amrit back and said,” I have taken full care of this pot and did not let even a drop of amrit spill out.”

Naarad replied,” Not even a single time my Lord! I couldn’t take your name. I was too busy taking care of the pot.”

Shri Hari said,” O Naarad! think. That poor farmer managed to take my name regularly inspite of his daily work while you couldn’t do it just once. That farmer’s love and offerings towards me is far more than yours. You took my name 24 hours a day as you were free whole day, however, when you were given some work to do, you forgot to take my name even once. That is why, he is my favourite disciple.

Naarad realized his mistake and apologised to the God at once.
